What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is an FDA-approved injectable that reduces and eliminates facial lines and wrinkles. BOTOX can treat:
  • Frown lines (wrinkles between your eyebrows)
  • Crow’s feet (wrinkles around the corners of your eyes)
  • Forehead wrinkles
BOTOX is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the United States, with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimating 7.23 million procedures performed each year. Duval Orthodontics also uses BOTOX to help its patients with bruxism, or jaw clenching. By targeting the muscles of your jaw, BOTOX can help alleviate the effects of bruxism, in addition to reducing or eliminating headaches and migraine pain.  
Wrinkles form when you contract a particular area of muscles too frequently. This makes the skin above those muscles fold in on itself over and over again. Over time, those folds settle in, getting deeper, lasting longer, and becoming permanent wrinkles.
BOTOX temporarily blocks the transmission of chemical signals between nerves and muscles, effectively reducing muscle activity wherever it’s injected. This reduction prevents the skin above from constantly folding and forming wrinkles, giving it time to recover, unfold, and fill out. BOTOX also prevents the formation of new wrinkles by preventing your muscles from contracting in the first place and making new folds in your skin.

Your BOTOX treatment is a minimally invasive, in-office procedure that only takes 15 minutes. Your dentist simply administers 3-5 injections in your target area, and that’s it! There’s no anesthesia, no incisions, and no downtime. The injections themselves feel like a quick pinch––if anything at all––since your dentist ices your target area before the injection.

BOTOX treatments entail virtually no recovery time. You might experience some slight bruising, but you can resume your normal activities as soon as you finish getting the injections. Many patients even schedule their treatment on their lunch break and go back to work afterward. You should see results within 5-10 days after your treatment. Results typically last 3-6 months, depending on the facial muscles that were targeted. BOTOX is intended to be a temporary solution to wrinkle reduction, so if you want to maintain your results, you’ll need to periodically get new injections. BOTOX treatments are actually thought to be cumulative, though, as the repeated injections eventually train your facial muscles to relax in the long-term.
